Obscuring the Dark

Smart and bright,
Bright as light
Always first
Nothing to curse.

Lunch break starts
Boys breaking hearts
She’s there alone
Hard as stone.

Prim and proper
All the time
No one guesses
Her heart’s empty mine.

Now she’s home,
Cold and bitter,
Her shell cracks apart
Like stormy weather.

Her grieving cries
Hidden by lies
Pretence, like a star
Obscuring the dark.

Night passes
Day begins
Smile on her face
Tears rinsed.

No one guesses
At her heart’s hollow,
The fake bright star
That the night has swallowed.

Back to school
Perfect again
Straight A’s for broken
Lucky bargain?
